It’s rare for me to start my column like this and writing this next part is a hard thing to do. Our community has suffered a loss this week. Jean Hurley passed away Saturday and I really am struggling to find the right words to say about such a great lady. We all knew her as the elegant professional working at the Bank of Calhoun for many years. The active member of St. Norbert’s, helping with the Knights of Columbus and you can bet she always brought food for every funeral and always visited everyone. The devoted wife of John, beloved mom to Jeff and Stacey, mother-in-law to Andy and Donna but the role she really shined in was enjoying retirement with John and her biggest loves her grandchildren, Luke, Jake, Taylor, Bailey, Gus and Max. She never missed anything they were participating in. She enjoyed cooking breakfast for JFL and Warrior Football during playoff season. She enjoyed picking them up from school and spent as much time as she possibly could with them. Last year after the fair I wrote in my column and posted on her Facebook page that her and Johnny are what retirement should look like as they rode along in their vintage convertible in the parade with all the grandkids, letting grandson Jake drive and he had just gotten his license.
I have a few personal memories to share as well. As I was waiting for the Fair parade to start in 2023 and my role that year as Grand Marshal here came Jean with a Northside Pepsi for me and told me “how deserving she thought I was.” Once on a busy Sunday evening for me at work she stepped in the kitchen at Straight Home and said “what can I do to help you?” That’s just how incredibly giving she was. I will miss our afternoon visits in the St. Norbert’s school pick up line and seeing her on the hill at the football games with her best friends cheering on the Warriors. A great lady who I was blessed to have as a friend. Please keep John, Stacey, Andy, Jeff and Donna, her grandkids, sister in law’s Roberta and Francie, nieces and nephews in your prayers.
These warm temperatures have us ready for Spring but I’m sure winter isn’t over yet. The Groundhog did see his shadow. Our Kampsville Ferry is up and running again and the ice has thawed out.
Happy Anniversary Mark and Debbie Becker on January 31.
Get those tickets bought. We are still looking for our Queen and the Friday night food and desserts are delicious.
Calhoun Entertainment Company has started rehearsals at the Center for American Archeology Gym for their Spring Musical “Cinderella.” We look forward to the musical every year. We are so glad CEC calls Kampsville their home.
St. Norbert’s celebrated Catholic Schools Week this past week with fun days and ended with their Annual Pancake and Sausage Breakfast after mass on Sunday.
Don’t forget FFA Strawberry orders are due February 22. They will be delivered during the first week of March. Full flat $28, half flat $15. If you don’t know an FFA member reach out to me by messenger or text and I will help you out.
Please continue prayers for Linda Herkert, Gary Gress, Billie Jo Eickmeyer, Kurt Roth, Margie Smith, Sue Aderton, Connor Gilman, Diane Rose, Luanne Baalman, Mark Angel, Kathryn Chapman, Joyce Blumenberg, Cindy Sievers, Isabel McGlaughin and Kiera Sievers
