The summer solstice happened this past Sunday (6/21). It is also known as estival solstice, and it occurs when one of Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt toward the sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere. The summer solstice is the day with the longest period of daylight and the shortest night of the year in that hemisphere. (Wikipedia). Soak up the light while you can and Happy Summer!
Make plans for a local July 4th celebration! On July 3rd at 4pm on the courthouse lawn, there will be a celebration entitled “America 250 – Honoring our Roots in Pike County, Illinois.” Opening Ceremonies will include speeches and remarks by Mayor Gary Mendenhall, Reta Hoskin, and C.D. Davidsmeyer. There will be a mural dedication, dulcimer performance, dance performance, a quilt raffle and a Revolutionary War fashion show. The program will end with the explanation and playing of Taps. There will be something for everyone! The Griggsville Estates will also have a fireworks display and video presentation on the 4th beginning at dark. Be sure to plan to attend one or both events to celebrate our country’s independence and 250th birthday.

What kind of summer are you having? Is it filled to the brim with activities? Is it a slow and easy time in your year? Will you take a big vacation soon? Whatever kind of summer you’re having, remember this: “Don’t overcomplicate a simple life. Turn off the news. Bake something yummy. Get some sun. Drink your tea or coffee from a cute mug. Create more than you consume. Enjoy being in nature. Love your people.” – Cottage Whimsy
