Jaxon Brunaugh, a senior at Jersey Community High School, and Lauren Flowers, a senior at Carrollton High School, were named the male and female Scholastic Athletes of the Year at the 37th Annual Silver Medallion Academic Excellence Awards Banquet held on April 10 at Lincoln Land Community College.
Carrollton High School’s Lauren Flowers has been named the female Scholastic Athlete of the Year at the Silver Medallion Awards along with her male counterpart from Jersey Community High School Jaxon Brunaugh.
According to High School Principal Leslee Frasier, this is the first time in the history of the award that a Carrollton High School senior has been selected for the Athlete of the Year Award.
Flowers, however is a shoe-in for the nomination as she led her basketball teammates in scoring this year actually setting a school record for most points scored over a four-year career, beating a record set previously by her own mother, Stosha (DeShasier) Coomer.
Currently, she is leading her team on the ballfield as a pitcher as the team is sporting a 14-0 record and just won first place in the Beardstown Tournament defeating Illini West 19-0 and Beardstown 12-0 to go 4-0 on the weekend.
The 37th Annual Silver Medallion Academic Excellence Awards Banquet was held on April 10 at Lewis and Clark Community College to recognize the top eight percent of each graduating class from area high schools.
Students from 21 area high schools were included, including students from Carrollton, Greenfield, North Greene, Calhoun, Jerseyville and many others.
In addition to the 217 students who received academic honors, also honored was Greenfield High School agriculture teacher Beth Burrow who was named Teacher of the Year.
The winner of this award is chosen by Lewis and Clark Community College officials based on student and staff nominations from each school. She has been the school’s agricultural teacher for the past 24 years.
