Carolyn L. Casteel, age 101, longtime Pittsfield business owner, died peacefully on Saturday afternoon at Liberty Village in Pittsfield, IL.She was born Aug. 15, 1923 on the family farm southwest of Pittsfield, IL. daughter of the late Harry and Alpha Doane Long.
She married Jean T. Casteel in December of 1948 and he preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1992.
Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Harold Kay (Marcia) Dehart, Allen (Chris) Horton, Crystal (Martin) Russell, Steve (Julie) Horton, Arlee (Pete) Grimsley, Mike (Gayle) Horton, Rhonda Johnson, Kathy (Brad) Willman, Roger (Joyce) Cooper, Susan (Tom) Foran, Tom Casteel, Marcia (Skip) Stevens, Michael (Jennifer) Casteel, and Carolyn Sue Fitzpatrick; and several great nieces and great nephews.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Alfred Long; two sisters, Lucile Dehart Long and Dorothy Horton.
Carolyn was a graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL. Carolyn, with her husband Jean, were owner/operators of Casteel Color Wheel in Pittsfield which opened in 1950. She and Jean rented a building prior to buying the store where it became the Color Wheel. She loved working with her customers on all of their projects involving the store. She was a lifetime member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church and always enjoyed the followship of those who attended with her. She was also a longtime Rotarian with the Pittsfield Rotary Club. Carolyn loved to travel and traveled extensively to many Rotary meetings throughout the United States and the world. She was an avid football and basketball spectator during her lifetime. She and Jean were part of a small group that started Little League in Pittsfield, IL.Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Pittsfield First Christian Church in Pittsfield with burial to follow in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pittsfield First Christian Church or Pikeland Foundation and sent to Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, Box 513, Pittsfield, IL 62363.
