Joseph A. Lawson | 80 | Jacksonville

Joseph A. Lawson, 80 years old, of Jacksonville, passed from here to his heavenly home on Sept. 1, 2025, in the home he shared with his wife of 57 years, Opal “Sis” Lawson.
Joe was born in San Jose, California and graduated from high school at Los Gatos Joint Union High School. Joe served honorably in the United States Army for many years. His career was a testament to his skill and many talents. Joe worked in assembly at RECO, Reynolds, and Pactive, but also managed Illinois Wholesale Furniture. He later worked as a mechanic and worked in maintenance at White Hall Nursing and Rehab after retirement.
Joe loved music, model trains, woodworking, and was a member of a country band playing guitar and the lead singer. He also lent his musical talents to worship at New Hope Church in Roodhouse. He loved working on cars and was very much a “jack of all trades.” He loved doing all these things, but most importantly he loved spending time with his family, especially his great grandchildren that know him as pawpaw.
Joe is survived by his wife, Opal “Sis” Lawson; sons, Michael (wife, Becky), Tony (wife, Chasity); grandchildren, Nicohl, Allyson, Courtney, Victoria, Brianna, Brandon and Billy; 13 great grandchildren; siblings, Faye Fry, Jimmie English and Garetta Kullman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brookie Holder and Arthur “Tex” Lawson; stepfather, Charles “Poppy” Holder; sisters, Peggy Camp and Linda Crayton; grandson, Joseph Lawson; and great grandson, Dietrich Fritsch.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025, at City Church in Jacksonville. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials are suggested to Morgan-Scott Suicide Prevention Coalition in memory of his grandson, Joseph Michael Lawson. The Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville is assisting the family.
