Helen Marie Likes Dopheide | 83 | Quincy
Helen Marie Likes Dopheide, 83, of Quincy, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025 at her home in Quincy, IL surrounded by her family.
Helen was born Nov. 5, 1942, in Hull, IL to Bennie and Alene (Eales) Likes. She attended Whittleton and Barry Schools, graduating in 1960. Helen married James Dopheide in September 1961.
A proud graduate of Barry High School, Helen’s journey of love and partnership began when she married her husband of 64 years. Helen worked at Apex Transformer until Jim was drafted in 1966, leading Helen to join him in Texas. It was there that their family grew with the birth of their daughter, Kathy. Upon their return to Quincy, they welcomed their son, James Jr.. Helen’s entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she played a pivotal role in the establishment of Dopheide Electric, a testament to her dedication and support for her family’s endeavors.
Helen’s love for her children was evident in her active involvement in their activities. She served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, imparting valuable lessons and creating cherished memories. Her interests were as varied as they were passionate. Helen was an avid gardener, nurturing a vegetable and flower garden and a collection of house plants. In her younger days, she relished the time spent square dancing with Jim, a shared hobby that brought them closer together.
An adventurous soul, Helen enjoyed the thrill of mushroom hunting and the simple pleasures of cooking and baking for her loved ones. Her fried chicken, potato salad, and divinity were legendary, and her culinary talents will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of tasting them. An animal lover at heart, Helen’s pets, especially her beloved dogs, were a constant source of joy and companionship. Their current dog, Sarge, will miss his daily massages.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth, survived by her husband, James; her daughter, Kathy Peters (Greg); her son, James Jr.; her sisters, Evelyn Workman, Karen Zanger, and Nancy Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, and in-laws who will carry forward her memory with affection and pride.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Albert and Rita Dopheide; her sisters, Welma Jean Hunter and Marilyn Ong; her brothers-in-law, Edwin Ong and Dennis Workman; along with several other in-laws.
As per her wishes, she was cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
