Pike County prepares for America’s 250th

The Pike America 250 committee has planned a celebration on Friday, July 3, at the Pike County courthouse lawn from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The committee was originally formed as a sub-committee of the Pike County Nancy Ross DAR Chapter and now consists of 21 individuals from twelve entities in the county. Members include Pike County and Pittsfield Economic Development Directors, members from New Philadelphia Association, Historical Society, American Legion and many other organizations.
Throughout the year, the committee has offered programming in partnership with all county schools and local libraries. An America 250 quilt was created by a volunteer and donated for a raffle with proceeds going to America 250 scholarships.
The committee was able to present four scholarships to Pike County high school seniors who were required to write an essay answering the question ”If you could name one person or event from history that you feel helped shape America into the great nation it is today, who or what would you choose and why?”
The official name of the group is “America 250-Honoring Our Roots in Pike County, Illinois” and promotes local and national history on a Facebook page with this title.
