Sheriff David Greenwood presented the program at the Rotary Club of Pike County’s July 26 weekly meeting. Greenwood updated the club on license plate reader cameras which are now in use around the county. He stressed that these cameras are a tool used by law enforcement and are not “red light cameras” used in some jurisdictions to issue citations.
The City of Pittsfield has five license place reader cameras, and the county is in the process of making another five operational. One Pike County township is interested in installing such a camera, he said.
The county’s cameras have been funded by a $10,000 donation from a private donor. Greenwood described them as “another set of eyes” for law enforcement. In addition to tracking a fleeing suspect after a crime, the cameras can also be used to locate missing persons. In addition to reading and investigating full license plate numbers, the cameras can also provide information from a vehicle description or a partial license plate number. The county has reciprocal agreements with neighboring jurisdiction and can also tap into the information of the entire Flock camera system nationwide.
