Jeff Abell
Jeff Abell announced his resignation as superintendent of the Griggsville-Perry School District last week. His last day will be June 30.
Abell has accepted the position of superintendent of the Winchester School District. Winchester and Bluffs have shared a superintendent for the past few years. The two districts recently decided to return to having their own superintendent.
The current superintendent, Kevin Blankenship, serves both districts, but will retire in June, mandating a new superintendent in both districts.
Abell said going to Winchester is almost like going home for him. He taught in Bluffs from 1998-08 and in Winchester from 2008-2017, before going to Meredosia- Chambersburg.
When asked if he felt Griggsville-Perry would be able to fill his position before he leaves, Abell said he thought there was a good chance.
“When this position came open, it was in January and I was hired at the March meeting,” Abell said. “I am willing to stay on as much as I can to help the new superintendent and Blankenship is staying on through December 1 to help both the new leader at Bluffs and me at Winchester.”
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the students, staff, school board, families and community members of the Griggsville-Perry School District for making my three years here a phenomenal experience,” Abell said in a letter to the district. “I am proud of the accomplishments we have achieved together during my tenure and have built relationships that will last for many years to come.”
Abell also said in the letter he is confident the successes G-P has had over the years will continue.
“I am confident the Griggsville-Perry School District will continue to be an outstanding district serving students with determination and compassion to help them reach their full potential, “ he said. “I will work diligently with the district leadership to provide continuity an as smooth a transition as possible.
Eric Kunzeman, school board president, said that the board had only recently received Abell’s resignation and have not had time formulate a plan to search for a superintendent.
Abell said he was unsure if the board will use an administrator search service or if there was a qualified, interested person within the district that might be promoted.
