Two fishermen were fined $100 each by Justice Wm. Surgeon last week for catching game fish in hoop nets in Swan Lake in south Calhoun County. The men pleaded guilty. The men were arrested by Federal Warden Ed Davis and Game Warden Ray Ridenhour. The wardens saw the men through binoculars taking game fish from hoop nets. They would lift their nets and take the fish to an old duck blind and dump their catch of crappies and black bass into a live net. About 125 pounds of fish were found in their possession. Some of the bass were large ones and weighed as much as seven pounds.

Most peach blossoms were probably not damaged Monday night by the low temperature, Martin Ralph, Extension Advisor, said Tuesday morning. “Many are definitely in the pink stage and anything below 20 degrees would be bad news,” he said. Peaches are about a month ahead of last year and about even with the year before, which was a bad year because of a late freeze. About two inches of snow fell Monday night and early Tuesday morning, with the temperatures dropping into the 20s. Most of the roads were clear by Tuesday morning and schools were in session in the county.
