Congratulations to Kampsville’s own Colleen Schumann on being crowned Miss Calhoun County 2024. Colleen is a member of the the Kampsville Party Committee and has always assisted with all of the town parties for the kids. She is the daughter of Bob and Christine Schumann of Kampsville and a Senior at Murrayville University. Colleen was also voted Miss Congenitally.
It’s a great week to be a Warrior! Normally I would start this week’s column all about the fair. But being right down by the goalpost with 2.4 seconds left on the clock with my camera in hand. I got to see up close Conner Longnecker score the touchdown to tie up the Warriors and CPC Panthers and Jack Webster kick the field goal to bring the Warriors on top as they brought down the 2023 Class 1A State Championship team and brought an end to their winning streak! Fans were excited, the cheerleaders were yelling louder than ever and Friday night under the lights never felt better.
Now let me take you to the fair! I’m actually going to take you backwards through it starting on the last night. A little over a month ago the Calhoun County Fair was in jeopardy of not having a Miss Calhoun Pageant because only two had signed up. But thankfully there were girls in our community who didn’t want to see this wonderful Calhoun tradition end and they signed up.
These girls did not disappoint. It was one of the best pageants I have ever seen. Five amazing speeches and five amazing answers to their questions. Thank you Jolene Fanning, Grace Sagez, Skylar Giberson, Paige Sievers and Colleen Schumann. Fun fact: all five of these beautiful ladies are waitresses at five different local restaurants. First Runner Up Skylar Giberson, Second Runner Up Grace Sagez and People’s Choice Paige Snyders.
The afternoon demo derby kept the crowds entertained with Kampsville’s Cole Lorsbach taking first in his heat and dad PJ taking second. Of course Sunday kicked off with an amazing parade. Thanks Cliff and Yvonne Nolte and family for heading this up and to all that participated. Terry Strauch served as Grand Marshall and what a deserving honor. Terry has given countless hours to our community over the years. Also everyone is raving about our CHS Band/Alumni and cheerleaders for coming together to keep the music going. Thank you band club sponsor Madeleine Heberling and Cheer Coach Lindsey Taul. The band will be playing at the Calhoun Homecoming Parade as well as possibly a few football games. So if you were ever in the band dust those instruments off and join in the fun.
Saturday evening at the fair saw record crowds and the crowning of a new Little Miss Calhoun Molly Hagen daughter of Eric and Sarah Hagen of Hardin. It also saw lots of people enjoying the tractor pull. Saturday afternoon was an unbelievable day thanks to, the new to the fair this year, Junior Fair Board and leader Kassidy Prough heading up AG Day. Kids enjoyed a scavenger hunt and prizes and thanks to the generous donation from Calhoun Farm Bureau and Tri County FS parents got a break to their wallet with half price armbands. Of course the kids enjoyed the Jr. Olympics held in the Mark Brangenberg Arena and the Pedal Pull. Morning at the fair saw the horse show and livestock judging.
Friday night at the fair saw a newly crowned Jr. Miss Kate Adams daughter of Nick and Tara Adams of Michael, first runner up Charlee Burch daughter of Chipper and Gwen Burch of Kampsville.
Crowds also enjoyed the Truck Pulls. There really is a little nostalgic hometown magic when the fair and the football game are both going on right next to each other.
Thursday evening opened with the flag raising and National Anthem, followed by the talent show. The boys and girls loved the Garden Tractor Pull headed up by Mike Mortland and his crew. This is a great addition to our fair.
Wrapping up my weekend at the fair my favorites the Lemon Shake Ups from the Yearbook Stand, the Pedal Pull, the Sizzler and seeing Jake Brannan who just got his license the day before driving his Grandpa Jonny’s most prized possession convertible in the parade with Jonny and Jeane and all of the grandkids riding with. Jonny and Jeane Hurley are what retirement should look like. Loving community and family.
Kampsville Legion Queen of Hearts resumes this Friday, get those tickets bought.
