It’s been an exciting week here in Calhoun. Our pool is open. On the first day over 80 were in attendance. I loved seeing all the kids on their bicycles with their beach towels around their neck headed down that way. Please use caution and remember to drive slowly and keep an eye out. Thank you to all who worked effortlessly to make this happen. The swimming pool means so much to our community.
St. Anselm’s Game night will be held June 6 doors open at 5 games begin at 6. Food will be served. We appreciate everyone coming out and showing their support.
Congratulations to Calhoun Junior High graduating class of 2026 who graduated May 21. Congratulations to Harper Watters and Wayne Weber on receiving the American Legion Award.
Happy 80th Birthday to Dan Bland on May 30.
Happy 13 Birthday to Rebel Williams on May 24.
Happy retirement to Robbie Becker from Calhoun Unit 40, she was the guest of honor at a surprise party over the weekend.
I was honored to attend the Crime Stoppers meeting Sunday afternoon at Harvest House in Jerseyville. They presented my granddaughter Reagan Clendenny with the Bertha Shulte Memorial Scholarship. She was chosen based on her essay of how she could make a positive impact on her community. Also attending were her Mom Lindsey Taul, brothers Hayden and Ren and her bonus Mom Kaylynn Clendenny.
Also receiving recognition was Brenda Shulte who received the Illinois Crime Stoppers Board Member of the Year Award for 2026.
The Gress, Robeen, McGuire reunion will be at the Lutheran Church in Hardin on Sunday June 14 with a meal at noon.

Don’t forget, we have a beautiful quilt being raffled donated by Pat Gotway. It’s on display at the Bank of Kampsville and tickets can be purchased there.
Calhoun Entertainment Company Theater Camp begins June 15. You can register on their Facebook page.
The Kampsville Legion put on a wonderful ceremony at Schumann Memorial Park on Memorial Day. Thank you to everyone who comes forward to help, a special thank you to Mike and Becky Weber for all they do. Becky always plays the national anthem on her trumpet and taps and she’s just wonderful. Following the ceremony a delicious meal was served at Bill Schumann Memorial Hall. Post Commander James Ewen shared this with me. It was written by Auxiliary member Virginia Becker and I would like to share it with you.
“What does this day mean to me? I am sure someone will ask why I help the American Legion. What’s in it for me?
Some of you may know that my Dad Paul Vetter was in World War II. He was captured while serving in the Philippine islands. He was a prisoner of war for 3 1/2 years. He was in the Death March, put on the Hell Ship and worked at the coal mines until the war was over. I often think of the men and women who serve in our armed forces. How much they give up. Some it’s their life, others it’s years away from their home and families. My heart goes out to them. I want to honor them all for their sacrifices. If I can help them in any way by baking or working at the Legion I feel honored doing so. Those who are here at this ceremony every year I want to thank you for showing how much you care. So on this day we are reminded of all the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom. God Bless those who have served, those lives that were lost and all those serving now.”
