The past week was very nice but weather report for today, Monday, is for golf ball sized, or larger, hail during rush hour, also high winds and possibly a tornado. I hope the weatherman is wrong, sure don’t need any of that.
On Sunday morning Little Miss Ella Alizabeth Carey was baptized by Rev. Michael Schempf, at St. Matthews Church in Brussels. After service a delicious meal was served to family and friends present for the occasion. Ella’s parents are Kevin Carey and Holly Kinder, grandparents are Jeff and Kathy Carey and Henry II (Joe) and Cyndi Kinder and great grandmothers Margie Carnes and Karen (Carey) Schobernd. Sponsors for little Ella were Haley Kinder and Darren Klaas. Thanks to Kevin, Holly and family for hosting the wonderful luncheon at St. Matthew’s Hall.
The Brussels High School Junior-Senior Prom was held on Friday evening at the Brussels Gymnasium. Many were present for the walk-in, followed by the crowning of this year’s King and Queen. Ryan Hagen, 2025 King and Abby Johnes, 2025 Queen were in the Procession and crowned the 2026 King Augie Eberlin and 2026 Queen Mady Nolte. Augie is the son of Aaron Eberlin and Michelle Eberlin and Mady is the daughter of Chad and Melissa Nolte, all residents of Golden Eagle. Congratulations to both Augie and Mady on their Coronation.
St. Mary’s School enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Zoo on Thursday. Doesn’t seem possible school will soon be out for the summer vacation.
Chelsie Kiel reports they rounded up the crew and headed to Disneyworld to celebrate Toby’s 5th Birthday. I’m sure everyone enjoyed that. It was also Joey and Chelsie’s 10th wedding anniversary last week. Best wishes Toby, as well as to Joey and Chelsie.
Saturday was the day to turn in all the Trash for Cash that everyone picked up. Our roadways look so great. Please, those of you who throw out beverage cans, water bottles, and other trash, let’s now help to keep our roadways looking great, just take your trash home and dispose of it. Again, many thanks to James Jones of Thunderbird Hauling and dumpster rental for providing the Calhoun Community Foundation with a no charge dumpster in which bags of trash were hauled away. Judy Burch, Treasurer of the CCF was at St. Mary’s parking lot on Saturday to keep track of who brought in bags of trash and how many bags. By next week I should be able to report on the winners of this event. Many thanks to my son who took off a half days work to help the Brussels Woman’s Club pick up trash. He has done this for the last several years and earlier weekends my grandson, Caleb also helped. We certainly appreciate your help, as well as all the others, who turned in bags of trash, to keep our roadsides looking great.
St. Matthew’s Vacation Bible School is fast approaching. The evenings of May 26, 27 and 28 the young adults will hold their workshops where they will become familiar with the Bible stories, help design skit sets and props and prepare to lead the children in a volunteer role the following week. These workshops are for youth in 6th grade up through college. VBS for the 2-year-olds up through 5th grade will be held June 1-5 with the closing ceremony, games and lunch on Saturday, June 6. The 2-year-old class the parents attend and are led in activities with their child. This class meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. While the older children meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Hopefully everyone registered by April 20 in order to receive the special t-shirt.
I drove to St. Peters, MO on Thursday morning where my daughter, Cyndi Axford, picked me up and drove me to the SSM Health, St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake St. Louis for a cat scan of my heart. Afterwards she treated me to a delicious breakfast at Denny’s. Before I returned home, she also took me for a bit of shopping, many thanks Cyndi.
I saw a recent ad by Winneberg residents of an upcoming Yard Sale on Saturday, May 9, beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 PM at the Winneberg Clubhouse. The sale is located at Riverview Drive and Quarry Road in Golden Eagle.
St. Mary’s School invited Brussels Grade School to join them last Tuesday for Truck Day at St. Mary’s Parking Lot. There was every kind of truck on display from our Calhoun Volunteer Ambulance, Point Fire District, Fuhler Plumbing, Tri-County FS, County Highway Department, the Sheriff’s Department, Matt Meyer Heavy Equipment Truck and Sharecropper Farm Equipment just to name a few. This event sparked curiosity among the students and brought learning to life. The schools would like to thank Mrs. Schelle Fuhler for coordinating this meaningful experience for the students.
The Calhoun Swimming Pool anticipates opening on Memorial Day. The committee wish to thank all the people that came out and helped over the weekend. I’m sure the Calhoun youth will be most happy to hear this. Thanks, one and all for making this possible.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Lisa Watters, 62, who passed away on April 23 at her home in Hamburg. Visitation was on Monday evening at Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin and funeral service on Tuesday morning at Indian Creek Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Randy Watters, her mother Carol Hirschfeld, daughter Lindsey (Craig J.) Watters, sisters Sandi Roundcount, Cheryl (Charles) Tepen, mother-in-law Becky Watters, brothers-in-law Rick (Becky) Watters, Ronnie (Marie) Watters, along with numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Charles Hirschfeld, father-in-law Albert Watters and brother-in-law Gary Roundcount.

Dear Lord, You shepherd us with patience and gentleness, protecting us from harm and leading us to life in abundance. Therefore, You are known as the guardian and guide of Your flock. Confident that we shall not want for anything if we follow the Good Shepherd. May we recognize Your voice when you call to us and not be distracted in any way. We trust our lives to Your loving care.
