As I write this today, it’s Valentine’s Day. So many romantic tales surround the history of Valentine’s Day. I like to think of it as a gesture of friendship. Doing something for someone without hope of reward. Only those whose generosity prompts them to give of their time or talents know what personal happiness and spiritual reward one receives from doing this!
I just returned this morning from Wright City, MO where I attended my great grandson Samuel “Sam” Holdinghausen’s 6th birthday dinner and party on Sunday at the home of his grandparent’s Shelly and Dennis Scherer. Also present were Sam’s parents Daniel and Brittney, Ashley Kirn, Noah and Addy of Wentzville, friend Ben Ketcherside, Jaymie and Joanie, John and Julie Carnes; Lydia and Caleb of Edwardsville; Cyndi Axford of Chesterfield, MO.; and myself. So much delicious food and wonderful birthday desserts. I stayed overnight and returned home on Monday morning. Thanks to everyone for a great time. Many more “happy ones” Sam!
A Baby Reveal Party was held last weekend for Gregory and Ashley Nolte. All the family was present to enjoy lots of great food and congratulate them on the arrival of a baby boy in June. Grandparents Cliff and Yvonne Nolte, great grandma Marietta Nolte and other family members were in attendance for the celebration.
Yvonne Baecht and I were in Alton on Wednesday to visit our Podiatrist. Afterwards we were treated to a delicious Italian lunch at Santino’s Restaurant by my son John Carnes. Also had a nice visit with him as well. Many thanks John, we both enjoyed the wonderful lunch and time together. Afterwards Yvonne and I did some shopping before returning home.
Congratulations to Abby (Schleeper) Baalman of Brussels, the new director and treating therapist at Alton Physical Therapy at their new location in Hardin. She has been a part of the APT family since February 2018, after graduating with her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Maryville University in St. Louis in December 2017. She works with patients of all age groups in an outpatient setting, especially those with pre and post-operative orthopedic injuries, gross motor development of pediatrics and preventative and post-injury athletes. She is married to Dave Baalman, and mother of two children. Also the daughter of Janet Schleeper and the late Leo Schleeper of Brussels.
Walter “Sonny” Kinder celebrated his 84th Birthday on Sunday at the San Gabriel Memory Center in Godfrey. Present were his wife Gerry and children Shelley Kinder, Susan Kennedy and Bruce Kinder and their families, plus a few close friends. At that time he had received 75 birthday cards and I’m sure more arrived on Valentine’s Day. Thanks to all who sent him a card to brighten his day.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Generose (Hagen) Gearing of Alton. Her funeral was on Feb. 11 at St. Mary’s Church in Alton. She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law and their families and a sister Kathleen (Robert) Weatherford. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Kathryn Hagen and brothers William and Ellis Hagen and sister Charlotte Jacobs.
Also deepest sympathy to the family of Ted “Redeye” Schumann of Kampsville who passed away on Feb. 3. His funeral was on Friday morning at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kampsville. He is survived by three children Beverly (Terrill) Mosbarger, Becky (Mike) Weber and Ted Jr. (Sonja) Schumann and their families and a brother-in-law Otto (Linda) Retzer.
Many family and friends attended the funeral of Norman “Sonny” Snyders on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church in Meppen. His visitation and funeral had to be changed to a later date due to the snow storm we had the week before. Keep his wife Alice and family in your thoughts and prayers.

Prayer of Love
Loving Father, we pray for an open heart and mind, so that we may recognize and be grateful for all the love in our life. We pray that we might find a new sense of joy and peace in Your love. Give us the grace to trust in Your loving plan for us so that whatever the circumstances over the course of our lives we may know that we are not alone, that we are loved by You, our Loving Father, who is full of tenderness, mercy and compassion. Amen
