“Turning 66 on Route 66” by Cheri Myers-Part 4: October 22-23
Today was a scenic side trip to the red rock area of Sedona, Arizona. We drove up to the scenic overlook where the gold aspens looked beautiful against the red rock. I had been there once before so I knew about their McDonald’s with the only arches in the world that are not yellow. They are turquoise — due to a desire to preserve the scenery, building codes mandate that commercial and residential developments don’t impede with nature’s beauty and they felt the golden arches would. In Flagstaff, we went to Old Town Shops and I had a Yeti sandwich at the Big Foot Cafe. Oct. 23 — We drove to Winslow, Ariz., where the famous intersection is at “Standin’ on the Corner” Park. We spent a brief time in northern Arizona’s Painted Desert, a vast, striated badlands that extends some 150 miles from the eastern end of the Grand Canyon into the Petrified Forest National Park (which we did not have time to see). We stopped for pics at the historic Painted Desert Inn, another Mary Colter project. We entered New Mexico with its Lumberjack Man statue aka as The Muffler Man, took pics at the historic El Rancho Hotel with food and drinks named after the celebrities who stayed there in the 30s and 40s. We spent the night in Albuquerque.
