Had a beautiful Saturday with a high of 42 along with sunshine. Sunday woke up to a dusting of snow and today sunshine and a high of 43 predicted. Then Wednesday is a different story, 80% chance of snow and then a bit cooler. St. Louis weather forecaster commented earlier that February is the month for our heaviest snowfall. Won’t be long and we’ll find out!
Last Friday the Brussels Woman’s Club held their belated Christmas luncheon, gift exchange and short meeting at the Wittmond Hotel. The food was delicious as always and the conversation was most enjoyable. Was good to catch up on what everyone had been doing and what our plans are for the new club year. Present for the event were Elaine Eberlin, Judy Burch, Dana Kirkpatrick, Jean Barton, Judy Klemme and myself. Due to some last minute health issues a few members were missing.
On Saturday, I held my belated family New Year’s Day get together at St. Matthew Church Hall. Lots of great food, visiting and even an exciting game of “Rob Your Neighbor.” So sorry that two people had to work and two were under the weather and unable to come. Present were Shelly Scherer of Wright City, Mo.; Cyndi Axford and Mackenzie of Chesterfield, Mo.; John and Julie Carnes and Caleb of Edwardsville; Ashley Kirn, Noah and Adelaide of Wentzville and her friend, Ben Ketcherside; Jamie and Joanie of Warrenton, Mo.; Daniel, Brittney and Samuel Holdinghausen of Festus, Mo.; Melinda Snider and Francis Toppmeyer. So happy they were all able to attend and we could spend the afternoon together.
Congratulations to Erika Odelehr who was recently hired as the new Administrative Assistant at Cope Plastics in Alton. She is the daughter of Jim and Kathy Odelehr of Golden Eagle. So happy for you, Erica!
Congratulations to “CJ” and Lisa (Kiel) Kinder of Golden Eagle on the birth of their first child on Jan. 10, 2023. She was born at Alton Memorial Hospital weighing 7 lbs and has been given the name Charleigh Ann. Grandparents are Keith and Rachelle Kinder of Golden Eagle and Ed (and the late Barb) Kiel of Meppen. Great grandparents are Gilbert and Shirley Kinder of Golden Eagle and Rach and Nancy Lippincott and great-great grandfather is Maurice Lammy, all of Kampsville.
Congratulations to Olivia Brodbeck who was one of four Girl Scouts from Southern Illinois to receive the Gold Award for her project to improve the basketball court in the Batchtown Town Park. With the help of other fellow scouts, Batchtown officials, etc., she made the court bigger, re-striped the official lines, poured concrete, installed lots of new equipment and even added educational material. As a finishing touch, she also held a basketball camp. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders of their community. The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. She is the daughter of Chad and Amanda Brodbeck and is currently a sophomore at Brussels Community High School. Olivia is a Trifecta Girl Scout who has earned the Bronze Award, the Silver Award and now the Girl Scout Gold Award. Quite an accomplishment Olivia, we are all proud of you!
Cindy DiCarlo of Chesterfield, Mo. spent Sunday and Monday with her parents Bob and Bonnie Held. Grandma Marie Held also enjoyed her visit while she was here.
Kathy (Carnes) Carey celebrated her birthday over the weekend. On Sunday she visited with her mother-in-law, Karen Carey-Schobernd, and upon arriving home had a pleasant surprise. Her daughter, Hannah, had made a delicious supper, complete with homemade carrot cake and cream cheese frosting. Many more “happy ones” Kathy!
The Brussels Point Fire Protection trucks went by Monday evening around 5:15 p.m. with sirens blaring and lights flashing and I was saddened to see they were headed nearby to the Navarre homestead which was engulfed in flames. They battled the fire for many hours with the help of Batchtown Fire Department, especially keeping it away from a modular home close by and other farm structures. No one was residing in the home at this time, but still such a shame to see this 100+ year old home completely destroyed.
Birthday Blessings this week to Dennis Johnes, Betty Sievers, Kory Pohlman, Cole Bick, Larry Wieneke, Nancy Moennig, Carol Stepanek, Renee (Nolte) Ballard, Janet Lorsbach, Judy Kinder of Godfrey, Doug Wilschetz, Mary Ann Godar, Rosie Bick, Kevin Eilerman, Judy (Hagen) Devening, Sandy Kulp, Lynette (Baecht) Eberhardt and all others celebrating their natal day at this time.
Happy Anniversary to Larry and Nancy Kulp, Bill and Joyce Schulte, Lonnie and Loretta Hattemar, Jeff and Paula Schleeper and all other couples celebrating their wedding anniversary this week.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, Feb. 18, the Annual St. Mary’s School Benefit to be held at the Brussels American Legion Hall. Chicken dinner, raffles, card draws, silent auction, etc.

Prayer for peace and understanding
God, Bring peace to all the violence going on in this world. Bring hope to the hearts that have grown cold and bring love to the souls that know only despair. Bring wisdom and understanding to those who only see chaos around them. Bring comfort to those who suffer. You alone can show this world what true and lasting peace is, along with love. Apart from You there is no true peace to be had, Amen
