As usual the killing frost took care of the growing season and now, we are back to beautiful weather in the 60’s and 70’s. A high of 75 predicted for today. One of the TV weather persons was quoted as saying nice weather to continue right up to Thanksgiving. That sounds good to me and I’m sure many others!
If you receive your Calhoun News-Herald early enough next week please be reminded the Brussels High School Civics Club has organized a Veterans Day Program on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. in the Gymnasium. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for refreshments. All veterans and their guests are welcome to attend. A table will be set up in the gym for any photos or memorabilia that families would like to display honoring their veterans during the program. Please feel free to bring your items for display.
Owen Hattemar of Alabama visited his parents Larry and Marcia Hattemar in Brussels recently. He arrived on October 26 and remained until November 4 spending 10 days helping his parents prepare for the winter season. Larry especially appreciated his help outdoors. While here the family: Larry and Marcia, Ed and Laurie Lehr, Tyler and Adrianne Friedel, and Alan and Kathy Friedel had a wonderful day together celebrating Kathy’s 60th Birthday. On Friday Owen, Larry and Marcia drove to Union, MO to visit Larry’s brother, Kermit Hattemar. Kermit is now in the Union Care Center. If family and friends in this area would like to send Kermit a card and note I know he would certainly enjoy it. His address is: Kermit Hattemar, Union Care Center, 1080 Marie Lane, Union, MO 63084.
Caleb Carnes, who spent a few days in Calhoun with grandparents Francis Toppmeyer and I returned home on Monday evening. After John and Julie Carnes helped their daughter, Hannah Carnes, (formerly of Philadelphia, PA.) pack for her long trip to New Zealand and saw her off at the airport they flew back to St. Louis. From there they drove to Calhoun, enjoyed a delicious supper with Mark, Mary and Max Toppmeyer and returned home to Edwardsville.
Many thanks to everyone that came to St. Matthew’s Annual Turtle Soup Supper drive-thru on Saturday evening. Soup, roast beef sandwiches and desserts were available for purchase. This is a yearly event, always held on the first Saturday in November.
Many thanks again to Melinda Snider for driving me to the St. Anthony’s Moeller Center in Alton again on Wednesday for another iron infusion. Seems every week I have a Dr. appointment, etc scheduled somewhere. No fun growing old, sure thought the “Golden Years” would be better!

PRAYER FOR VETERAN’S DAY
Dear Lord, We thank You for each and every veteran who served our country through the years. Comfort those who struggle in life after war. Help us to honor and care for those who have given so much for us. Grant healing to those veterans who have been wounded, be it in body, mind or soul. We respect them, we thank them, we honor them and we are so proud of them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
