Monday through Thursday was in the low to upper 80’s. Then a rain storm on Thursday night, and now since then we are back in the upper 50’s. Quite a change for sure. The TV weatherman kept us carefully watching the weather Thursday night as Calhoun was one of the counties in line for a possible tornado. Thank the good Lord we were spared but in other nearby counties tornados did touch down which resulted in damage to homes, sheds and barns.
The Brussels Woman’s Club met on Tuesday, April 16, at noon at the Wittmond Hotel for a wonderful luncheon of chicken salad sandwiches on croissants, chips and fresh fruit by hostess Judy Burch. Susan Haug-Kinder provided two delicious desserts of lemon bars and cherry cheesecake bars. Thanks to both these ladies for the great luncheon. Afterwards a short meeting was held and then everyone started working on the many recipes received to date. Please keep them coming ladies, and men too. Present for the afternoon were Elaine Eberlin, Judy Burch, Jean Barton, Jean Barton, Susan Haug-Kinder, Mary Kirn, Lynda Wrigley, Judy Klemme and myself. April is also Flower Exchange Month so all the ladies went home with a beautiful hanging basket or a lovely container of flowers for the outdoors.

My Saturday all day worker was my son John Carnes of Edwardsville, who had a busy day on the farm. First of all, we took the bags of Cash for Trash to Brussels, enjoyed visiting with both Judy and Charles Burch a bit, then home to do the trim work. Then mow, work on the mole tunnels with a new treatment, tilled part of the garden and got some gardening in of lettuce, radishes, cucumbers and onion sets planted. Cleaned up all the garden tools and mower and came in for supper about 8 p.m. Can’t thank him enough for all his hard work.
Dan Hagen and Shirley Cloninger of Hardin were visitors of Dan’s brother and wife, Roy and Barb Hagen on Friday evening.
