The past week was beautiful, sunny with no rain and the farmers were busy every day harvesting corn and soybeans. Temperatures in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s by end of the week. So much going on over the weekend, Duck Races in Hardin, roadside stands in south Calhoun very busy selling pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, etc. and lots of tourist keeping both ferries busy.
On Thursday evening Yvonne Baecht, along with Sue Kinchloe, enjoyed birthday dinner in Jerseyville at the home of their son and daughter and family, Keith and Becky Baecht, Matthew and Samuel. The occasion was Matthew’s 21st birthday. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful dinner and evening together. Many more “happy ones” Matthew.
On Thursday visitors and helpers of Robert and Anita Nolte were their daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Keith Ballard of O’Fallon, IL. The Ballard’s spent most of the day doing some landscaping for their parents. Before returning home they enjoyed dinner and a nice visit with Bob and Anita. As we age, we certainly appreciate the help of our children.
The Brussels High School Class of 1981 decided a few years ago to have a Class Reunion every year. The past year they finally all reached the ripe old age of 60 & 61 so why put off meeting every five or ten years. On Saturday evening John Ohlendorf, one of the class members, along with his wife Mary, hosted the get-together at their home in Golden Eagle. Nine of the class members and their spouses were in attendance namely Sue (Kinder) Kennedy of St. Charles, MO., Debbie (Wieneke) Kuhn and Fred, Duane (Kate) Sievers, David (Elaine) Pohlman, Keith (Kelly) Weigel, Jeff (Karen) Kinder, Kathy (Alan) Friedel, Eric Friedel and friend Robyn Kiel and John (Mary) Ohlendorf. The host (John & Mary) fried fish and chicken and everyone attending brought a side dish. Sounds like they all had a great time.
What a pleasant surprise at St. Matthew Church this morning to see a former Pastor and wife, Rev. Reuben and Ati Ankney visiting from Malaysia. Earlier they had visited their daughter’s (Stella and Laura) and family in California and Texas.
I don’t know who all works for the electric companies from Calhoun that were sent to North Carolina to help with the power outages due to Hurricane Helene. I did see my great nephew, Steve Carnes, posted on Facebook today that he was on his way home from Virginia but now their crew was headed to Florida to work after Hurricane Milton hits this week.
Don’t forget this Saturday, October 12, the Sons of the American Legion at Brussels are holding their annual Barbecue. They will be selling pork steak and brat sandwiches, along with plate dinners with three sides. Once again, it’s a drive-thru beginning at 10:30 AM. I can vouch for them having been there every year and it is delicious!
The Brussels Trunk or Treat is on Saturday, October 26, at the Heritage Town Park. Food and games start at 4 PM and at dusk trunk or treat begins. To reserve a spot or have any questions please call Angie Willman at 618-401-0983. In case of rain or cold weather this may be moved to the Brussels American Legion.

Prayer for
Hurricane Victims
Dear God. Please guide and bless the rescue and relief efforts taking place now after Hurricane Helene. Protect the lives of those urgently in need of safety, water, food and shelter. Comfort the injured, the bereaved and the lost. Calm the wind and the waves of the approaching Hurricane’s and spare those in its path from harm. Open our hearts in generosity to all who need help in the coming days. We ask all this in your name, Amen
