After a nice weekend it appears that in the coming week, we will be in the low to mid-90’s with heat index 103 to 105. Air conditioners and fans will be busy from here on out. We could use a good shower of rain for the gardens, crops and even the yards, if all goes as predicted that may happen today.
Vacation Bible School ended on Saturday morning with a program for the parents and grandparents featuring the stories, songs, etc. they were taught during the week. After the closing ceremony games were played and refreshments were served. Many thanks to the staff, helpers and other volunteers for the wonderful week that the children all enjoyed. With 117 children attending it was a great week for them all.
Happy 90th Birthday to Mary Lee Rose who celebrated with family and a few friends on Saturday at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Susan Rose in Golden Eagle. Family members’ present totaled thirty plus so I know it was a joyous afternoon for Mary Lee to have them all present. Many more Happy and healthy ones to her.
My visitors on Saturday afternoon were my son and grandson, John and Caleb Carnes and their soon to be five-year-old neighbor boy, Clark Seaman. Their first stop was Pere Marquette Park for the Youth Fishing Fair. Then across the river to Calhoun where they spent some time visiting friends at a clubhouse by the Mississippi River, then a visit with Francis Toppmeyer and afterwards to my house. Clark had to tell me all about it and show me photos of the fish he caught. While John did some outdoor jobs Caleb took him for rides on his 4-wheeler. When they left and headed back to Edwardsville, they stopped and took photos of the recently unveiled National Memorial of Military Ascent. Quite a full afternoon for all of them.
The Brussels Heritage Park held their first “Music in the Park” on Friday evening. Many people were in attendance and enjoyed the great music by Cash Goetten and the RoeDean Revelers. Mark your calendar now for June 19 when the music will be provided by Behavior Intervention. Then on July 3 Highway 67 and July 17 Backwoods Burden.
Several people from this area attended the Saturday morning ceremony of the dedication of the National Memorial of Military Ascent held on the 82nd Anniversary of D-Day. The memorial features twelve life-sized bronze Rangers climbing a limestone bluff. The dedication included the colors by the Leech Lake Ojibwe Honor Guard, American Legion Post 648, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 805. Invocation given by NMMA Chaplain Warren Gohl followed by the national anthem. Mayor Michael Morrow of Grafton spoke of this event that was to honor veterans and dedicate the monument. Keynote speaker was Jered Helwig, deputy commander of the U. S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base. The seating for the dedication was for 500 people and they well exceeded that.
On Memorial Day Gary Fortschneider entertained at his home with lots of delicious food and beverages. Present were Bernie and Gloria Snyders, Jim and Judy Friedel, Ronnie and Toni Pohlman, Tony Moennig and friend Judy Peer, Jan Baalman and Mary Lee Rose. Gary also had a birthday cake to celebrate Ronnie, Tony and Mary Lee’s birthday. Best wishes to all of them!
Congratulations to Mady Nolte, daughter of Chad and Melissa Nolte, who recently brought home awards for placing 3rd overall female in the Varsity All Conference HS Skeet, as well as 3rd place Individual Female Varsity at the USA Clays High School State Skeet competition in Decatur.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Jean Hagen, age 95 who passed away on June 2nd. Visitation June 11 from 8:30 AM until time of service at 10 AM at Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin. Devoted mother of three sons Alfred (Sharon) Hagen, Timothy Hagen and Bret Hagen and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy and two sons Bret and Timothy.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Patricia Meseke, age 77, who passed away on June 3. She married Richard Meseke in July of 1969 and he survives. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 10 from noon to time of service at 2 PM at Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin.
This coming Saturday, June 13, Art in the Park at Brussels Heritage Park from 10 AM to 2 PM sponsored by the Board of the South Calhoun Library, to date 26 vendors will be present.
Birthday Blessings this week to my great granddaughter Addy Keppler, also Virginia Murphy, Graceyn Heffington, Gloria Ohlendorf, Rose Brangenberg, Brooklyn Droege, Debbie Halemeyer, Jeanette Droege, Olivia Brodbeck, Diann Sevier, Keith Kinder, Linda (Hutchinson) Held, David Titus and all others celebrating their natal day at this time.
Happy Anniversary to my son and daughter-in-law John and Julie Carnes (35 years) Mark and Karen Ohlendorf, (25 years), Robert and Laura Kaibel (68 years), also Glenn and Yvonne (Halemeyer) Campbell, Joe and Laura Navarre, Chad and Melissa Nolte, Don and Jessica Droege, Cody and Ashley Affholder, Phil and Linda Held, Mike and Kelly (Rose) Lawrence, Travis and Janine Hagen, Larry and Mary Kay Wieneke and all other couples celebrating their wedding anniversary this week.
With June being the month of many weddings my prayer this week is for all couples celebrating a wedding anniversary this month.
