Flag Day is June 14 – this Sunday. Flag Day is celebrated to commemorate the Second Continental Congress’ adoption of the American flag’s design in 1777. The day was officially established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949. Since its inception in 1777, the flag has been modified twenty-six times! The current fifty-star version was adopted in 1960 after Hawaii became the 50th state. (www.VA.gov) Did you know, on American soil, the U.S. flag must always hold the position of highest honor. When flown on the same halyard with state or local flags, it must always be at the peak. Happy Flag Day.
The North Pike District Library will be hosting Quincy Children’s Museum at Perry Park on June 18 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A variety of toys and activities for kids of all ages will be set up for the morning. Be prepared for some potentially messy fun! Breakfast will be served as well. This event is all part of the library’s “Read, White & Blue Summer” festivities.
As we move through June, and you begin to make plans for your Fourth of July celebrations, consider attending the “America 250 Celebration” on the Pike County Courthouse lawn in Pittsfield on July 3 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be activities for all ages including DJ music, a mural dedication, a Revolutionary War fashion show, vendors, face painting, patriot games, flag ceremonies, and so much more! The Griggsville Estates is working to create a special tribute video celebrating America’s 250th year of independence. This video will be displayed immediately following the fireworks show at The Estates on July 4th. To help make this project possible, coordinators are seeking donations to help cover the cost of the fireworks. Every contribution – large or small – helps create a meaningful tribute that honors our freedoms, our veterans, and the American spirit. The Bright Star Parish will host a couple of Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs this summer, offering children opportunities for fun, learning, and spiritual growth. A community VBS program will take place in Detroit from July 6-10, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening. Titled “The Story of Creation,” the program will explore God’s creation with an emphasis on stars, light and the power of God’s word.
The second VBS program will be held at Perry United Methodist Church from July 27-30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening. This program includes a light meal and features the theme “Families of the Bible,” highlighting stories of faith from scripture.
