Quite an unusual winter we are having so far, with the most snowfall this area has had in several years. Really enjoyed the beautiful sunshine for a few days last week and it did melt a lot of the snow packed and icy areas. Now with much colder temperatures, was down to 3° and a high of 19 predicted for today and Tuesday AM down to 1° and a high of 13 degrees. As you may have already guessed both the Brussels Ferry and the Golden Eagle Ferry have closed due to ice. Thankfully the workers have Winfield Ferry to accommodate them.
Congratulations to Ryan Hagen of Meppen, student of the month at Brussels Community High School. He also was the winner of the Raider Recognition. Ryan is the son of Dave and Kara Hagen.
On Sunday afternoon a Bridal Shower honoring Marisa Kuhn was held at St. Matthew’s Church Hall. A wonderful luncheon was enjoyed by family and friends in attendance. Marisa is the daughter of Kelly Weigel and Charlie Kuhn, both of Golden Eagle. She will become the bride of Michael Grasso on March 15, 2025 in Cary, North Carolina. Marisa received many wonderful and useful gifts.
The family of the late Edgar and Florence Goetze attended church service at St. Matthew Church on Sunday morning. Afterwards they enjoyed dining at the Fill-In Restaurant in Batchtown. Present were Paul and Mary Lou Goetze of Meppen, Paul and Ann Marie Pohlman, Wyatt and Gracie of O’Fallon, MO, Fred Goetze and friend Virginia, Richard and Debbie Goetze of Griggsville and Reggie and Mayme Goetze, Sammy and Eleanor of Perry, IL. After dining they all enjoyed a nice visit.
Kaela Bick, daughter of Derrick and Jan Bick of O’Fallon, MO. drove over to Calhoun on Saturday. She enjoyed visiting her grandma Judy Bick in Batchtown and later in the day grandparents Roy and Barb Hagen in Brussels.
My visitor on Friday late afternoon was my son John Carnes of Edwardsville. He shoveled snow from all the doorways and sidewalks, filled my water softener and checked on many other things to make sure everything was OK before the near zero temperatures arrived. Enjoyed having him dine with me and a brief visit before he headed home.
Congratulations to Eldon and Christine Johnes of Batchtown who celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary with their family over the weekend.
With the snow all around and cold temperatures, not much has been going on the past week so don’t have many news items to report. Now with the ferries out and cold temperatures there definitely will not be many people out and about.

JAN. 22, SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE DAY.
Almighty God, we praise You for Your foreknowledge of who we are and who we will become, even before we are born. Protect the unborn, guide all people in this world to protect and preserve life as a precious gift from You. Thanks also for the gift of my life and for the lives of all the people surrounding us. Please use our life for Your good purposes and as a witness to Your Son. In His name, Amen
JAN. 20TH Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday marks the 30th anniversary as a National Day of Service. This day was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. This day was first celebrated on Jan. 20, 1986. In 1994 Congress designated the holiday as a National Day of Service and marking the third Monday in January every year at Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father by entering the ministry to become a Baptist Minister. On April 4, 1968, at the age of 39, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Let’s honor his memory by organizing, volunteering and spreading the word to “Make it a day on, not a day off” for you and those around you.
