Last Sunday night had a bit of rain, sleet, snow mix but with no accumulation. Then the week started out with a temperature of 40 degrees, intense fog on Wednesday that did not lift until we got a shower of rain around noon. The remainder of the week had a gradual warming trend and high of 80 degrees by the weekend. I saw daffodils blooming in a couple of yards, hoping that’s an indication that Spring is near.
Loren and Julie Kulp and Lincoln, Willie and Renee Rose, Charlotte, Andrew and Emme Kate and Ben and Jill Rose, Claire and Lila spent a weekend recently at the Great Wolf Lodge in Gurnee, IL near Chicago. Everyone enjoyed the great indoor water park and all the other amenities the lodge has to offer.
Fred and Debbie Kuhn have just returned from an 11-day cruise leaving from the Florida coast. They enjoyed visiting Puerto Rico, Saint Thomas, Saint Croix and other US Virgin Islands. Beautiful weather and so much to see and do, especially onboard.
The Brussels Girl Scouts, Troop 405, enjoyed Girl Scout Sunday while ringing the church bells at St. Matthews, handing out bulletins, greeting everyone and even taking the collection. After church service the Vacation Bible School staff served a delicious fried chicken and ham dinner with lots of sides and desserts. The theme of VBS this year is “Tropical Trek,” Jesus comes to Seek and Save. Workshops for the young adults will be May 26, 27 and 28 and then they will return the following week, June 1 through 5 to help with the younger children. Closing program is scheduled for Saturday morning, June 6.
The Brussels Girl Scouts, along with the help of the National Honor Society from Brussels High School, placed bags on resident’s doors this past weekend. The following Saturday, March 14, beginning at 9 AM they will be stopping by to retrieve the bags. Once collected the bags are taken to St, Matthew’s Hall to be sorted, boxed and then delivered to our local food pantry, St. Vincent DePaul in Hardin. Girl Scout Leaders are Debbie Kamp, Amanda Brodbeck and Diane Tepen. Other service projects of the Girl Scouts are Trash pick-up, they assist placing Memorial Day Flags on the cemeteries, Veteran’s Dinner and Christmas Visits. There are six age levels of scouts. Young girls range from kindergarten to seniors in High School. During their meetings they work on badge projects that prepare them to be women of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.
Congratulations to my granddaughter, Mackenzie Axford who has begun her new job as an Administrative Assistant at Fairway Elementary in the Rockwood School District. She graduated on November 3, from Maryville University with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Mackenze is the daughter of Trevor and Cyndi Axford of Chesterfield, MO. So proud of you Mackenzie!
Congratulations to Ryan and Leann Kulp on the birth of their first child. The infant, weighing 5 lbs. and 13 ounces was born on Jan. 13 and has been given the name Arthur Jerome. Proud grandparents are Larry and Nancy Kulp of Brussels.
Hard to believe but election time is drawing near. Hope you have March 17 marked on your calendar, so you remember to vote. Voting is only one of the many ways that citizens can participate in public decision making. Elections embody a distinctive group of democratic values and perform essential functions in our communities.
Patti Rose and her grandson Trevor Rose visited recently with Patti’s daughter and son-in-law Mike and Kelly Lawrence and family in Conway, Arkansas. Sounds like they had an enjoyable visit while there.
Lots of events are coming up in Brussels; March 13 all alumni Brussels High School basketball players as well as girls and boys alumni band members. The event will be in the Brussels Gymnasium, doors open at 5 p.m. and games start at 6:30 p.m. Come join the fun and relive the glory days while supporting Brussels Parent Teach Organization.
Congratulations to Eddie Plummer who recently was chosen as a 5-star employee at the Walmart store in Godfrey. Eddie is employed in the Pharmacy Department. He is married to the former Jodi (Schulze) and has two children, Aiden and Kinsley.
Next is Sunday, March 15 the Sons of the Brussels American Legion are hosting a Game Day at the Legion Hall. Doors open at noon with food available to purchase and games start at 1 p.m.
Friday, March 20 and 27 the Brussels American Legion are hosting their annual Fish Dinner at the Legion Hall. This year it will a drive-thru dinner starting at 4 p.m.
Next is the Calhoun Entertainment Company spring play at the Kampsville Gym on March 25, 26, 27 and 28 beginning at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, March 29 a matinee starting at 2 p.m. This year’s production is “Annie.”
