Tonight, at the GP Middle School in Perry, you can attend the GPMS Spring Showcase! The Showcase will feature two drama performances from 5pm-6:30pm and 5:30pm-6pm. There will also be an art show, science fair and a living wax museum! A carry-out dinner will be available in the cafeteria. The meal will include mostaccioli, salad, and homemade pie. The cost is $10 and you must call ahead (217-236-9161) to reserve a meal. Head over to Perry to the Spring Showcase and let GPMS do the cooking for you tonight!
Congratulations to Griggsville resident, Sam Kessinger, on her selection as the WGEM/JWCC Foundation Career Makeover winner! Sam was notified last week that she had won this amazing opportunity and is looking forward to getting started with the makeover. We wish you all the best in this journey, Sam! The City of Griggsville Townwide Cleanup Days begin today through May 1st. Be sure to get your properties cleaned up for summer!
GFL Environmental is hosting Pike County Cleanup Day set for May 2nd from 8am-12pm. This event is for residents of Pike County. You will be allowed to deposit one car or pick up load of trash for free. (No trailers.) Residents will be required to show ID for proof of residence. Call 217-833-2732 with questions or visit gflenv.com. The drop-off site is Hickory Ridge Landfill Facility (32246 375th Street, Baylis, IL. Acceptable materials include municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, cardboard, paper and newsprint, aluminum cans, plastic, metals, furniture.
May is graduation month for area junior high and high schools. Make note that GP’s 8th grade graduation is set for May 21st at 7pm in the Perry gymnasium. GP’s high school graduation is set for May 22nd at 7pm in Nichol Gymnasium in Griggsville.
This Friday is May 1st and commemorates “May Day!” This day marks the halfway point between spring and summer and traditionally is meant to celebrate springtime and new life. But May Day has many different origin stories that have developed over time. One of the oldest and most famous is the festival of Beltane, which was enjoyed by the Celts of the British Isles. This festival honored the return of life and fertility to the world and was thought to divide the year in half between the dark (winter) and the light (summer). In the 19th Century, May Day took on a new meaning in the U.S. when May 1st was declared International Workers’ Day amid a labor movement for worker’s rights and an eight-hour workday. Given the holiday’s Celtic ties, regions with Celtic history, like Britain, France, Spain, Ireland, and the U.S., celebrate May Day as a seasonal holiday.
