The calendar indicates summer begins next Tuesday, June 21. But according to the weather predictors, it arrived a bit early. The temperature yesterday reached 95 degrees with a heat index of 105 degrees and today was even worse with it reaching 99 degrees and heat index of 110 degrees. Feel so sorry for anyone that has to work outdoors, I hope they are staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks. I also hope the elderly have an air conditioner to keep them cool.
Congratulations to Chloe White who signed with McKendree University in Lebanon, IL to play basketball for four years. She graduated from Marquette High School in May. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a high honor student. Chloe received numerous sports awards and trophies throughout her high school years. She is the daughter of Amanda Thomas of Brussels and Sam White of Texas. Grandparents are Denie and Jeni Kiel of Brussels. Best wishes to her!
Congratulations to Greg and Ashley Nolte of Golden Eagle on the birth of their first child. The infant was born on June 10 at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis weighing 6 lbs. 6 ozs. He has been given the name Cooper Joseph. Grandparents are Cliff and Yvonne Nolte of Golden Eagle and Peggy Brewer of St. Louis, and the late Gary Brewer. Great grandmother Marietta Nolte of Brussels.
Jason and Shannon Jackson of Godfrey, who were wed on April 24 at the Hardrock Resort in Cabo San Lucas Mexico, were honored on Saturday. A reception and dance were held at the Lockhaven Golf Club Banquet facility in Godfrey with family members and friends in attendance. Shannon is the daughter of Jeff and Debbie Kamp of Golden Eagle.
Vacation Bible School at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Brussels was held last week with nearly 100 children in attendance. Many thanks to all the teachers and helpers who made this event another successful one. On Saturday a closing ceremony was held, games played and refreshments served.
Barb Ward of Decatur spent the weekend with her mother Marie Held. On Saturday Barb took her mom for a little drive around the countryside which Marie especially enjoyed. Barb returned home on Sunday evening.
Weekend visitors of George and Yvonne Baecht were Daniel and LeeAnn Baecht and Connor of Brookline, Mo. Also their daughter Lynette and Mark Eberhardt and Joe of Chenoa. On Saturday they all attended the high school graduation party of Matthew Baecht at Hope Lutheran Church Hall in Jerseyville hosted by his parents Keith and Becky Baecht and his brother Samuel. Many family members and friends were in attendance for the dinner and afternoon together. Matthew’s grandparents are George and Yvonne Baecht and Sue (Underwood) Kinchloe. Congratulations Matthew on your graduation.

Ladies of the Brussels Woman’s Club don’t forget we meet this Thursday, June 16 at St. Matthew Church Hall at 1:30 p.m. Please bring your items to fill the laundry baskets for the Oasis Center for Abused Women. Elaine Eberlin is hostess for the day and a program on the history of the South County Library, written by Marie Held, will be given by Carol Sue Carnes.
