South Calhoun just can’t seem to get any rain, it either goes north or south of us. Only 2/10ths of an inch last week and another 2/10ths this past weekend. Crops still look good, but they sure could use a nice shower. Temperatures remain in the mid 90’s.
Brussels American Legion Post #685, under the leadership of their Commander Elden Kinder, provided the 21 Gun Salute on Saturday for the Memorial Service of Dan Rose. Dan passed away on June 2, 2023 at his home in Roodhouse. After the military rites his ashes were scattered on the family farm in Golden Eagle. Dan is the son of Betty Rose of Golden Eagle and the late Charlie Rose. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023 at the Straight Home in Hardin.
Congratulations to Matt Ray and Ann Baalman who were married on Saturday, July 15, at the Macoupin County Courthouse in Carlinville. Present were her sons Kirkland Spears, Austin Spears and his friend Jessica Kanallakan. Ann is the daughter of Steve and Diane Baalman of Meppen. Best wishes to the happy couple.
Reese Kiel treated his mom Tammy Kiel to the Saturday night concert of Rapper Post Malone at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. He surprised his mom, Tammy Kiel, with a ticket for her birthday. Many more happy birthdays to her.
Joey and Chelsie Kiel celebrated Joey’s recent 40th Birthday by attending the Morgan Wallen concert at Busch Stadium, also a Cardinal ballgame and a get together with family and friends. Many more “happy ones” Joey.
A graduation party for Cole Bick was held on Saturday afternoon and evening and hosted by his parents Derrick and Jan Bick and his sister Kalea at their home in O’Fallon, Missouri. His grandparents Roy and Barb Hagen of Brussels and other family members from the area were in attendance. Lots of great food and cold beverages. Cole’s great Aunt Martha Bick made the beautifully decorated and delicious graduation cake. Cole graduated from Fort Zumwalt High School the end of May. In the afternoon the kids enjoyed swimming and that night beautiful fireworks were enjoyed by all present.
Hannah Carnes of Philadelphia flew to Lambert Airport in St. Louis on Friday to spend four days with family and friends. On Saturday she accompanied her parents John and Julie Carnes and brother Caleb to Calhoun to the home of her grandpa Francis Toppmeyer. I joined them mid afternoon and enjoyed a wonderful visit with Hannah (and family). Thanks to the Carnes’ who brought food for us all to enjoy. John grilled steaks and various veggies, also had corn-on-the cob, while I brought slaw and marinated cucumbers. Later in the evening we enjoyed New York style cheesecake with cherries on top. Had a great visit with Hannah and family and Francis. Many thanks for the invitation to join them. On Sunday they took Hannah to Busch Stadium for the Cardinals and National’s ballgame, in which the Cardinal’s won and Monday night she and her mom attended the St. Louis Muny Opera presentation of West Side Story.
Ben and Jill Rose, Claire and Lyla of Brussels have just returned from a wonderful vacation in Branson. They enjoyed swimming, miniature golf, the water show on The Landing, wall climbing, Titanic Museum tour, riding go-karts, Hollywood Wax Museum, the aquarium, roller coaster rides, etc. Sounds like a fun trip for all the family.
Marie Held will be celebrating her 103rd Birthday on Thursday, July 20. If you would like to send her a card I know she would certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness. Her address is 127 W. Main Street in Brussels, IL. Her daughter, Sharon McLeod, is flying in Tuesday from Montana to spend time with her. God’s Blessings to her on here natal day and in the year ahead.
Calhoun County Picnics are right around the corner. Batchtown St. Barbara’s will be the last weekend in July, 29 and 30. Next is Meppen St. Joseph’s Picnic Aug. 5 and 6 and then Brussels St. Mary’s will be Aug. 12 and 13. They all start at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening with turtle soup, fish sandwiches and other food items. On Sunday there will be a Cafeteria Style Dinner starting at 11 a.m. with indoor air-conditioned dining and carry-outs available. Lots of games, I Dood It and Bingo, and games for the kids, also a Country Store and music for your listening and dancing pleasure.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Kayla Kronable who passed away unexpectedly at her home in Roxana on July 13, just 8 days shy of her 36th birthday. Visitation is Thursday evening 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin and funeral on Friday at St. Joseph Church in Meppen. Kayla is survived by her significant other Brett Jackson, her mother Virginia (Gary) Heichelbeck, two brothers Kyle (Candice) Kronable and Josh Kronable and their families. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Kronable.
Birthday Blessings this week to Geneva Bailey, Tom Jacobs, Macie Kinder, Cody Kiel, Sarah Rose, Marie Held, Olivia Rowlings, Angie Tepen, Holly Kinder, Ed Kiel, twins Mason and Miles Schleeper, Fred Herter and all others celebrating their natal day at this time.
Happy Anniversary to Dennis and Linda Halemeyer on their 50th Anniversary, also Denny and Carol Rose, Bruce and Diane Sevier, Roger and Michelle Sievers, Kent and Tammy Schulze, Dennis and Kim Droege and all other couples celebrating their wedding anniversary this week.
Adelaide Renee Keppler celebrated her 7th Birthday on June 13 with a Bowling Party at the O’Fallon Bowl. She is the daughter of Ashley Kirn of Wentzville, MO. Grandparents are Shelly and Dennis Scherer of Wright City, Missouri and Jerry Kirn of O’Fallon. Great grandmothers are Carol Sue Carnes of Brussels and Patricia Scherer of O’Fallon. Present for the party besides those already mentioned were Cyndi and McKenzie Axford of Chesterfield, Daniel, Brittney and Samuel Holdinghausen of Festus and Ben Ketcherside and daughters Jamie and Joanie of Warrenton. Adelaide has an older brother Noah, age 11.

SEASONABLE WEATHER
Merciful Father, in times of plenty, as in times of want, You continue to provide for our needs. Give us, O Lord, our daily bread, especially in our area you created that is suffering from lack of rain. Protect our land from drought and storm so that the soil may bear crops. May our eyes look to You for all we need, that in every moment we receive it, we praise your name.
