Well, this past week has been a little better. Started out with a high of 54 but then in mid to upper 70’s through the week. On Wednesday afternoon and night, storms went through the area, Calhoun escaped the 3” hail that hit across the Mississippi River in O’ Fallon and Wentzville, MO area. South Calhoun had hard rain and lots of high wind and by early Thursday AM Ameren Electric subscribers were without electricity for about 6 hours. The hardest hit in Illinois was Brighton, Edwardsville, Collinsville, Livingston, etc. Saturday was a beautiful day, although awfully windy, and then Sunday a high of 48. The calendar says Spring starts on March 20th so let’s hope Mother Nature agrees!
The Brussels American Legion and Auxiliary had a huge turnout on Friday evening for their fish dinner, which by the way was delicious. The Brussels Girl Scouts hosted a bake sale that evening and also helped with the serving and clean up of the meal. Please mark your calendar for another delicious fish fry with three sides, dessert and drink again this coming Friday evening, March 22 at the Brussels Legion beginning at 4 p.m. and the Girl Scouts hosting another bake sale.
Larry Bick and great granddaughter Kahlyn Randolph of Arlington, TX made an unexpected trip to Calhoun and St. Louis area the past week. Kahlyn was on break and asked Grandpa Larry to take her to St. Louis to meet up with a former school friend whose family had relocated to St. Louis. To add to the experience, they decided to take Amtrak from Dallas to St. Louis. This being a first for Kahlyn and a second for Larry. His first train ride was 66 years ago when he left for Basic Training with the Air Force. While visiting Calhoun, Larry showed Kahlyn where he went to school, where his grandparents lived and where he was born and while enjoying other sites showed her where the Illinois and Mississippi flow together. They then met with other family members at the Old Fill In (formerly Sally’s) in Batchtown. Attending besides Larry and Kahlyn were Angela Roades, Marietta Bick, Marcia Klocke, Gerry Kinder, Sarah Hill and baby Roger, Scott Maag, Lydia Swan, baby Maddox and older brother Miles. They also enjoyed sightseeing in St. Louis, shopping and dining out with Kahlyn’s friend and family, on Friday they returned to Dallas.
Gilbert Kinder celebrated his 90th birthday over the weekend at his home with wife Shirley, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lots of great food and birthday cake enjoyed by all in attendance. Many more happy and healthy ones Gilbert!
My Saturday company was John Carnes and Caleb of Edwardsville. In the morning they helped with my honey-do list indoors and after lunch they picked up limbs, put new blades on the lawn mower, mowed, and did a general cleanup around the farm. Thanks to Caleb for cleaning the inside of my car. We did enjoy supper together that evening and a bit of visiting before they headed home. Many thanks for all you accomplished.
The live production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” which was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and a matinee on Sunday at the Center for American Archeology in Kampsville was enjoyed by a record crowd. Yvonne Baecht, Sue (Underwood) Kinchloe, Vera Droege, Paula Wieneke and myself were in attendance on Sunday afternoon. Also saw Barb Hagen, Tony Moennig, Judy Peer, Rita Nolte and Angie Tepen among the many enjoying the production. With a cast of 23 members, and the beautiful voices of 17 ensemble members, you could tell they had spent a lot of time preparing for this weekend. Then there was the choreographer, Art director, assistant and helpers, set designer, art department, master builder and his assistants, backstage manager, stagehands, costumes, lighting, sound, spotlight, in charge of curtain, programs, ads, tickets and posters. Takes a large number to put on a 3-hour production. Thanks also to Director Jerry Sievers (and wife Bonnie). This was the 35th year of the Calhoun Entertainment Company, who also presents a Christmas concert every year and the last several years have added a Country Jamboree. Many thanks to one and all.
Matthew Kuhn of Festus spent the weekend with his parents Fred and Debbie Kuhn. He had driven up to bring his son back home with him. Barrett spent an enjoyable spring break week with grandpa and grandma Fred and Debbie.
Sharon McLeod of Roundup, Montana flew in on Tuesday to spend two weeks with her mother, Marie Held and other relatives.
This coming Wednesday St. Matthew congregation will enjoy one more meal and fellowship before Lenten Service. No cost to attend the 6 p.m. meal, followed by service at 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday service times will be announced soon. On Easter, March 31 there will be a breakfast between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Then at 9:30 there will be an Easter egg hunt, followed by church service at 10 a.m. There is no cost to attend the breakfast but a free will offering will be collected to help defray the upcoming Vacation Bible School expenses.
Now that the grass is growing and mowings will soon begin, please remove the Christmas flowers and decorations so as not to hinder the mowing or trim work. Thanks, from the mowers and trimmers.

PRAYER FOR PALM SUNDAY (MARCH 24)
Dear Father in heaven, Your Son, Jesus, rode in lowliness on a borrowed donkey into Jerusalem, humbling Himself and emptying Himself for our sakes. In Your mercy, help us to humbly and patiently walk the way to Calvary with Jesus, that we may also share in His bodily resurrection on the Last Day, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen
