We did have a brief shower during the early morning hours of Sunday, 4/10th of an inch and others a half inch. A slight cool down of 92 on Sunday as the high, Monday 95 and by Tuesday 100. The crops, gardens and even the lawns could certainly use more rain.
Pat and Danielle Hurley and family hosted Father’s Day Brunch last Sunday at their new home in Hardin. What a variety of food prepared by Pat for everyone to enjoy. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy and Mimosa’s to drink. Enjoying the day together were Tom and Pennie Pohlman of Brussels, Shawn and Kenneathia Hagen and “D.J.” and Heather Neese, Marek, Rafe and Tad, all of Edwardsville.
Ed and Lisa Heffington of Godfrey also hosted Father’s Day dinner last Sunday afternoon. Ed fried up an abundance of fish he had caught and everyone brought a covered dish to share. Attending from Golden Eagle were Mark and Mary Toppmeyer and family and Francis Toppmeyer.
JoAnn Bieker of Golden Eagle picked up her nephew Owen Snyder from St. Charles area on Wednesday. They visited early evening with Dylan and Dellaray Bieker, then on to play Bingo. Thursday they enjoyed visiting the Meramec Caverns in Stanton, MO, Saturday they decorated for 4th of July and Sunday to the Cardinals game at Busch Stadium. What a fun filled five days.
Congratulations to Nick and Sydney McCall of Golden Eagle on the birth of their first child. The infant was born on June 16 at Alton Memorial Hospital and has been given the name Jackson. Nick is one of our hard-working Deputies at the Calhoun Co. Sheriff’s Office in Hardin.
On Thursday the Brussels Woman’s Club met for their June meeting. Judy Burch reported on the eight flats of annuals planted recently in the Club’s Memorial Garden behind the Village Hall and on the East end of the building, followed by the flower beds being mulched. This garden is in memory of deceased Woman’s Club members. The main topic of discussion being our upcoming Cookbook to celebrate the Bicentennial of Calhoun County. Lots of recipes are still arriving but please note our cut-off date is July 15. If you haven’t already submitted recipes, please do so in the next few weeks. Our next meeting will be Friday, July 26 at the Wittmond Hotel. Recipes can be mailed to Judy Burch, P. O. Box 1, Brussels, IL 62013 or emailed to Elaine Eberlin eeberlin@@frontier.com.
On Saturday evening John and Julie Carnes and Caleb of Edwardsville, Jane and Wyatt Mandernach of Marthasville, MO, and Mark and Mary Toppmeyer, Max, Maggie and friend Josh Wieneke hosted a dinner at the home of Francis Toppmeyer for the many friends and co-workers of Lydia Carnes, who will be helping with the Calhoun Pub Crawl in memory of Lydia on September 14th here in Calhoun. I also attended and enjoyed meeting many of them and partaking of the delicious food available to everyone. If anyone would like to donate a basket for the Silent Auction please notify Julie at 618-334-2988. The event will begin with an 11 a.m. Registration at Straight Home in Hardin and end there as well. This year the Paws for the Cause Team will be supporting Isabel McLaughlin, a precious girl who is battling cancer, to help alleviate some of her medical expenses.
The Jamboree, under the direction of Jerry Sievers, was held on Sunday afternoon at St. Anslem’s Hall in Kampsville. The entertainment was awesome as usual, so much talent here in Calhoun and neighboring areas. Such a variety of songs and the music provided by the seven instrumentalists who accompanied them was fantastic. There were also a couple comedy acts to give us a good laugh. Delicious sandwiches and out-of-this-world pies were enjoyed by all in attendance. Thanks to Jerry for remembering I asked him last year after the show, how about an Elvis selection next year and he followed through. Hope he does a couple next year!
Don’t forget the upcoming July 3 event at the Brussels Heritage Park. There will be a parade, lots of delicious food for sale, a clown, face painting, caricature artist, band “Back in the Saddle” and around 9 p.m. a fireworks display. Flag Ceremony at 6 p.m. led by the Brussels Girl Scouts. Other items include a card draw, raffle and 50-50 drawing.
